About SF Shines

SF Shines invests in commercial corridors through facade improvements, including grants, design services and project management. The goal is to increase economic vitality along the city’s commercial corridors, attract new businesses and provide support to existing businesses.


SF Shines Ocean Avenue Retail Corridor Program

The San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development has awarded a $100,000 grant for 3 to 10 small business facade improvement projects for 2013. Application deadline is November 10, 2013.  All work must be completed by June 30, 2014. The city has also awarded the Ocean Avenue Association a block grant for assistance to small businesses to apply for and receive these funds for façade improvements.

Program Objectives
  • Enhance the neighborhood streetscape.
  • Increase neighborhood safety.
  • Restore the historic and architectural character of the neighborhood.
  • Foster a sense of pride in the community.
  • Encourage investment in the neighborhood.

Who is Eligible?

Ocean Avenue Ingleside business and property owners within the Community Benefits District are eligible to apply for the Ocean Avenue program.

Applicants must demonstrate the following:
  • Consent from the property owner is required.
  • Required insurance coverages must be in place.
  • A financial contribution to the project is expected.

Eligible Improvements

Nonstructural building improvements such as cleaning, painting, graphics/signage, lighting, windows, doors and removal of safety gates and grilles.


Eligible Building Types

Commercial or mixed use buildings with ground floor retail storefronts qualify for this program.


Grant Award Amounts

Up to $20,000 to $33,000 in city funds depending on the number of projects selected. A 25% match is normally required from the business or property owner. If you cannot secure matching funds, your portion may be waived based on demonstrated financial need.
Applicants can also receive business technical assistance through local community based organizations.


Selection

Competitive applications should demonstrate:
  • Area-wide benefit(s):  Your business must provide services to low and moderate income residents in the neighborhood.
  • Commitment to the Corridor:  Demonstrate a commitment to the retail corridor/neighborhood by having a minimum 3 year lease.
